Potters Bar Golf Course has been in family ownership for almost 100 years. For most of that time, it was operated as a Golf Course run by its members. Unfortunately, due to a UK-wide decline in golf participation the Club went into liquidation and the site has, and continues to, decline in the absence of the expensive ongoing grounds maintenance which was previously paid for by the golfing fees.
However, while golf is no longer a viable option for the site, its location within a short walk of the railway station with its train and bus connections and the wide range of facilities along Darkes Lane, makes it an environmentally friendly and highly accessible site that can be a suitable, natural extension at the heart of Potters Bar.
The family wants to work with the local Council and community to deliver a sustainable solution. This could provide a community resource such as extensive Country Park supporting a range of leisure facilities, a site for a primary school, supported by much-needed homes for local people.
The family has not been approached by a hotelier or bike/car park operator to discuss any alternative or viable proposals.
As new homes are needed and there is a lack of brownfield sites that can be used to develop them, using greenfield sites is an inevitable consequence and because of the location close to Potters Bar Station and local facilities, as well as the defensible boundary we will create, we believe this former golf course is the most sustainable local site for housing.
The family has therefore appointed CEG to bring forward a sustainable solution for the future.
CEG is committed to delivering vibrant new communities. We create distinctive new communities around the UK, making space for lives to flourish and neighbourhoods to evolve.
Our approach is collaborative and we have secured a huge number of awards for our engagement and placemaking, as well as the design and environmental credentials of our developments. We specialise in place making and would work closely with the Council and the local community to ensure that we create a legacy of which residents of Potters Bar can be proud.
